Charles Bukowski's "Dostoevsky" can be found a few posts down (March 4, 2004).

Big City Secrets was a music show (named after Joseph Arthur's most-wonderful debut album) hosted by Judah Morford on Houston's KPFT 90.1 fm from April 2002-March 2004. I've left this blog up for curious music-seekers out there looking for certain songs. Feel free to email me if you have any questions or would like to get in touch: streetoftreesATyahooDOTcom (obviously, substitute the appropriate symbols where I have all caps).

Thanks for stopping by.

So, tonight is the last show. hmm. It will be 3 hours, and during the first hour, I'll be playing an interview with Jonathan Relph of Junetile that was conducted two weeks ago. If you have anything you'd like to hear this last night, by all means, let me know.

The end of things always brings reflection, and this week I've been thinking about a poem. A few years ago, I was driving to work early in the morning listening to Writer's Almanac. The poem for the day was called "Dostoevsky" by Charles Bukowski. Dostoevsky was a hero of sorts for Bukowski, but the poem works many ways. For me, it makes me think of music and the musican(s) that have saved me from so much. I think we all probably find or seek out earthly things that reveal more of what and whom is behind it all. Maybe music does that for you too. I hope so. Thank you for listening and reading.

Dostoevsky

against the wall, the firing squad ready.
then he got a reprieve.
suppose they had shot Dostoevsky?
before he wrote all that?
I suppose it wouldn't have
mattered
not directly.
there are billions of people who have
never read him and never
will.
but as a young man I know that he
got me through the factories,
past the whores,
lifted me high through the night
and put me down
in a better
place.
even while in the bar
drinking with the other
derelicts,
I was glad they gave Dostoevsky a
reprieve,
it gave me one,
allowed me to look directly at those
rancid faces
in my world,
death pointing its finger,
I held fast,
an immaculate drunk
sharing the stinking dark with
my
brothers.
